NPP will acknowledge judiciary when it gets it right – Ross Osei Owusu

NPP legal directorate member backs Court of Appeal decision in Sedina Tamakloe case.

A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Legal Directorate, lawyer Ross Osei Owusu Esq., says the party will not hesitate to acknowledge the judiciary when it believes the courts have made the right decisions.

His comments follow the Court of Appeal’s decision to strike out the Attorney General’s application for a stay of execution in the case involving former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe.
The application was withdrawn by the Attorney General.

Speaking to Lantam Papanko on Starr Focus, Ross Osei Owusu said the NPP’s position on the judiciary is not one of automatically opposing decisions that go against the party.
“We from the NPP do not close our eyes to the judiciary when they are doing the right thing,” he said.

He said the party fully supports the Court of Appeal’s decision in the Sedina Tamakloe case, arguing that there was no justification for continued attempts to keep her incarcerated after she had been exonerated by the court.

“I don’t see why a person has been exonerated by a Court of Appeal and you sit there as an Attorney General and still want to keep the person in incarceration. It does not make sense,” Mr Osei Owusu stated.

According to him, the appropriate avenue for the Attorney General, if dissatisfied with the court’s decision, is to pursue the matter through the established legal process.

“If you feel you have a compelling case, go back to the courts to do the needful. You do not curtail the liberties of another person because you feel that there are some political gains you want to get out of it,” he said.

Mr Osei Owusu further maintained that the Court of Appeal’s decision should pave the way for Ms Tamakloe’s release.
“If the Court of Appeal has made this pronouncement, the woman ought to be out and I support the position of the court. I support it entirely,” he said.

He added that the NPP’s support for the decision demonstrates that the party is prepared to recognise judicial decisions it considers to be proper, irrespective of the broader political context surrounding a case.
