The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is at a critical “crossroads” as internal contestations intensify, according to Dr Jonathan Asante Otchere, Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
Speaking in an interview with Isaac Addae on The Verdict on Starr 103.5 FM on Tuesday, September 30, Dr Asante Otchere analysed the underlying motives behind the scramble for leadership positions and the stakes in the upcoming chairmanship race.
He described the decision by former Communications Director, Nana Akomea, to contest the National Chairmanship as a calculated attempt to influence the future direction of the party.
“I am not surprised Nana Akomea is contesting for the chairmanship race in the NPP. It is all geared towards capturing the soul of the party,” he remarked.
The political scientist warned that the current internal friction within the NPP could trigger yet another major internal challenge, threatening the party’s cohesion.
“The NPP risks an internal challenge once again due to the current happenings in the party,” he cautioned.
While acknowledging the presence of strong contenders, Dr Asante Otchere refrained from declaring a clear frontrunner.
“I am hesitant to declare whether Dr Boakye Agyarko is the likely candidate to win the NPP chairmanship; the dynamics have changed and only time will tell,” he said.
He stressed that the ongoing “internal bickering” makes the choice of a respected and formidable leader non-negotiable, particularly with the 2028 general election on the horizon.
“The NPP is at a crossroads due to the internal bickering; hence they need a formidable chairman going into the 2028 general election,” he emphasised.
Singling out Dr Boakye Agyarko, a former Minister, he argued that his experience and stature could provide the solid leadership the party requires.
“The NPP needs a very solid chairman who can garner respect and crack the whip. Boakye Agyarko stands tall in this regard,” Dr Asante Otchere stated.
He concluded that the outcome of the chairmanship contest will be pivotal to the NPP’s future, warning that without unity and strong leadership, the party’s ambition to “break the 8” and secure a third consecutive term in 2028 will face serious jeopardy.
