The New Patriotic Party (NPP) may have suffered a crushing defeat in the 2024 elections, but what’s unfolding now makes the polls look tame. With the dust barely settled, a storm is brewing within the party’s highest ranks, and the unity the NPP once flaunted is rapidly unraveling.
Forget about reconnecting with disillusioned voters for a moment, because the real war is happening in-house.
Kennedy’s GH¢4 Million “Surprise”
To pull off this year’s annual delegates conference, party insiders say the NPP needed a staggering GH¢16 million. The businessman-turned-presidential hopeful stepped up with a GH¢4 million donation, seemingly generous, undeniably headline-grabbing.
To some, it was a patriotic show of loyalty. To others, namely, those in the Bawumia camp, it was more performance than patriotism.
Spokesperson for Bawumia 2024 Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye didn’t mince words. He labeled the donation’s public nature “needless,” suggesting it was more about Kennedy building his personal brand than rebuilding the party’s foundations.
“We’re in a moment that calls for quiet work, not loud gestures,” Aboagye said.
The Clapback from Team Ken
Naturally, the Kennedy camp wasn’t going to let that slide.
Spokesperson for Ken Agyapong, Kwasi Kwarteng shot back, saying the donation was a “timely intervention” and dismissed accusations of showboating.
“When the party was in dire need, Kennedy Agyapong stood up. That’s not a stunt, it’s leadership,” Kwarteng fired.
Bawumia’s Alleged “VIP Access” Raises Eyebrows
But that’s not the only tension threatening to blow the lid off the NPP.
Whispers have turned into open frustration over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s apparent access to the inner circle of party organizers during the conference, a zone that’s supposed to remain neutral.
Critics allege it was a tactical ploy to signal dominance ahead of 2028, while others within the party insist it was simply protocol.
NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, tried to downplay the controversy, but the undercurrents are undeniable. Some camps, including key figures aligned with Kennedy and other sidelined factions, aren’t buying the explanation.
Fractures or Just Fumes?
As the NPP tries to stitch itself together after a historic electoral rejection, one thing is certain: the party’s center is no longer holding.
The questions now are many: Who truly commands the heart of the NPP? Who’s pulling the strings behind the scenes? And who’s just throwing money, and muscle, at the mess?
The 2024 election may be over, but the real battle for the soul of the party is just getting started.
Stay tuned.
