Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing it of prioritising political ambition over the welfare of Ghanaians.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, June 17, Dr Boamah argued that the party’s focus on internal electoral activities shows a lack of genuine concern for national recovery efforts, particularly following what he described as economic mismanagement during its tenure in government.
“The Alternative Is… The Competent Economic Management Team did enough damage to pensioners, people with disabilities, women, the youth and Ghanaians in general. In 6 short months, instead of apologising SINCERELY for their misdeeds, they’re focusing on the next elections. NPP thinks only about themselves and the next elections. The Alternative Is…,” Dr Boamah wrote.

His comments come in response to the NPP’s decision to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026 to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The date was approved at a joint meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua said the decision was consistent with the party’s constitution and did not require any amendments. He added that the timeline would provide sufficient room for internal preparations and a competitive election process.
