As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds its nationwide primary to select its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, has urged party supporters to prioritise unity above all else, regardless of the outcome.
“One person would emerge, and whoever emerges, the key point is that let unity prevail,” he said during an interview while delegates cast their votes on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Shaib cautioned against framing the race as a two-horse contest, emphasising that all five aspirants remain competitive. Drawing on his experience in election management, he noted that surprises are common, and delegate voting can often defy popular expectations.
“Delegates are dynamic. The campaign noise you see publicly does not always translate into votes,” he said, urging supporters to focus on party cohesion after the results are announced.

The five aspirants contesting the NPP flagbearer position are: former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong; Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong; former Minister for Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former NPP General Secretary and Presidential Press Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.
About 211,000 delegates are expected to vote across more than 300 polling centres nationwide, with the outcome set to shape the party’s strategy for the 2028 general elections.
The presidential primaries has officially closed nationwide, with the sorting and counting of ballots now underway at polling centres across the country.
