Voting in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries has officially closed nationwide, with the sorting and counting of ballots now underway at polling centres across the country.
The exercise, held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, saw an estimated 211,000 delegates voting at more than 300 centres to elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The contest featured five aspirants: former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong; Abetifi MP and former Food and Agriculture Minister, Dr. Bryan Acheampong; former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former NPP General Secretary and Presidential Press Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong.

At the Ayawaso East Constituency, voting concluded under tight security, with officials confirming that the sorting of ballots has begun following the close of polls. More than 60 security personnel were deployed to maintain order throughout the process.

Earlier in the day, a delegate at the Ayawaso East polling centre was arrested after attempting to record the voting process, despite repeated warnings from party officials and security officers.
The arrest formed part of strict enforcement of the NPP’s directive banning filming and the use of recording devices, including alleged body cameras, at voting centres.

Meanwhile, there were reports from some polling centres that a number of delegates declined to vote, allegedly citing the failure of their preferred aspirants to provide financial inducements.
Ahead of the polls, all five aspirants signed a peace pact, committing themselves and their supporters to a violence-free process and pledging to respect the outcome of the election.
The Ghana Police Service, designated as the sole security agency for the exercise, continues to oversee the collation process.
Results from the primaries are expected later today after counting and official declaration.
