The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will take to the streets on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, to protest what it calls politically motivated harassment of its members by state security agencies.
The announcement was made by the party’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, who, in a Facebook post on Friday, September 12, declared.
He claimed the government is harassing members of the NPP through security agencies.
He said, “Tuesday, 23rd September, the National Youth Wing will organise a demo against the state-sponsored police harassment. From Obra Spot to police headquarters. 6 a.m. sharp!”
The planned protest comes in the wake of the detention of NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.
He was arrested on September 8 and charged with “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace” and the publication of false news.
On Friday, September 12, an Accra Circuit Court ordered that he remain in custody for two more weeks to give prosecutors additional time for investigations.
He is expected to reappear before the court on September 19.
Party leaders say the demonstration will not only register their disapproval of Abronye’s continued detention but also highlight what they describe as “politically-tainted arrests” and intimidation of opposition figures.
The NPP says a formal petition will be presented to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) as part of the protest.
Beyond Abronye’s case, the party points to a string of investigations and arrests targeting its members.
Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is currently under investigation for alleged fraud, financial loss to the state, and money laundering. Other party affiliates have also been picked up in unrelated cases.
According to the NPP, the September 23 protest is expected to draw thousands of supporters from across the country, signaling what the youth wing calls a firm stance against “state-sponsored intimidation.”
