Ellen Ama Daaku, spokesperson to Mahamudu Bawumia, has applauded the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Lydia Yaako Donkor, for her decisive intervention following the recent inter-school sports violence in the Central Region.

The clashes, which involved students from Aggrey Memorial SHS, Adisadel College, Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS), Obrachire SHTS and Kwanyako SHTS during zonal athletics competitions, left several injured and heightened concerns over rising indiscipline in second-cycle institutions.

Within 24 hours of the incidents, six students were arrested from Aggrey Memorial SHS and three from Swedru School of Business, following what authorities described as a near-fatal assault on a 17-year-old boy.

Speaking on GHOne TV with Lily Mohammed, Ama Daaku revealed that the CID boss personally visited one of the affected schools after a viral video showed a student being pelted with stones and blocks.

“For her to come to your school, that should tell you the gravity of the situation,” Ama Daaku said, commending the CID Director-General’s hands-on approach. She added, “This is not business as usual.”

According to her, the victim had been caught up in the chaos unintentionally and had done nothing to provoke the attack. “They nearly killed the boy,” she stressed.

Ama Daaku backed the CID’s decision to ensure all perpetrators are prosecuted, insisting the violence must not be dismissed as mere school rivalry.

“We have to look for them and send them to court. Let’s go into their backgrounds,” she said, arguing that addressing such behaviour requires firm legal consequences.

She further called on the Ghana Education Service to review security arrangements at inter-school sporting events, including tighter supervision and stricter control of student participation.

“If you are not an athlete, I don’t think you should even be there,” she suggested.

Describing the situation as complex, Ama Daaku concluded, “This is a hydra-headed problem with multi-stakeholders,” urging families, schools, law enforcement and education authorities to work together to restore discipline in Ghana’s schools.
