Hon. George Opare Addo, Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, has explained how the government plans to create jobs for young people in Ghana.
According to him, the government will introduce programs to help youth find work, and partnerships with private companies will also play a big role.
Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV with Serwa Amihere, the minister stressed that the government cannot create all the jobs on its own. Instead, it will work with private businesses to provide training, internships, and employment opportunities.
“We must first understand why some young people are not in school, training, or working. Then, we will find the right jobs for them,” he said.
He explained that one of the government’s key initiatives is the National Apprenticeship Program and the One-Million Youth Coding Initiative “These programs aim to equip young people with the skills they need to secure jobs”, he added.
However, the minister admitted that some past youth programs had failed, and he promised that his ministry would track progress to make sure the programs were effective.
But, Mr. Opare Addo insisted that the ministry’s main job is to bring all youth programs together and make them more effective. “For years, different ministries have been running youth initiatives. But what has been the outcome? This ministry will make sure we see real change,” he stated.
To measure success, the government will use data to track employment rates, assess how well training programs work, and get feedback from young people. The minister believes that with a proper structure and strong partnerships with businesses, the ministry can create real opportunities for the youth.
