The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has rendered an unqualified apology to the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, after sharp comments made by its leadership in the wake of the recent assault on a nurse at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, and General Secretary, Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, met the Health Minister in Accra on Wednesday, September 3 to formally express regret.

The meeting, held behind closed doors with the minister and senior officials of the ministry, ended on a cordial note with assurances of renewed collaboration.
The apology follows public backlash against remarks by Dr. Tenkorang-Twum, who, in reacting to the viral video of a patient’s relatives attacking medical staff at Ridge Hospital, suggested that the Minister’s background as a farmer made him unfit to understand hospital operations.

The comments were widely condemned as disrespectful and unprofessional, sparking criticism from civil society, youth groups, and the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF), which strongly defended the dignity of farmers.
Amid the controversy, the GRNMA had also warned that its members would not hesitate to withdraw their services if safety concerns at health facilities were not urgently addressed.

By Wednesday’s meeting, however, the Association softened its stance, acknowledging the inappropriateness of the earlier comments and pledging to work constructively with the ministry to improve security and working conditions for health workers.
