Grammy-nominated musician and global cultural ambassador, Rocky Dawuni has shared a powerful lesson on vocal discipline, revealing that daily voice training is a non-negotiable part of his routine.
Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Thursday, July 17, Dawuni encouraged artists, especially rising talents, to treat their voice as a muscle that must be exercised and maintained consistently.
“I do voice training every day,” he said. “It’s something I picked up on tour. I mostly go to these elderly musicians and ask them about their process because I’m constantly learning.”
He recalled a turning point during a past tour when fatigue began to affect his performance. An elderly musician offered advice that reshaped his entire approach.
“He asked if I did training. I told him I don’t; I just go, and it happens. Then he said, ‘Your voice is your instrument, and it’s like a muscle. If you don’t exercise it, one day you’ll call upon it and it won’t answer.’”
Since then, Dawuni has made voice training a daily habit, no matter how short the session may be.
“Every morning, even if it’s for a short period, I do warm-ups. I do skills to not only build the strength in my voice but also the capacity; pitch accuracy, vocal power, and the ability to articulate melodies smoothly.”
The celebrated musician’s experience is a reminder that excellence requires discipline, consistency, and the humility to keep learning, principles he continues to live by as he represents Ghana on the global stage.
