S/R: Damongo water project nonexistent; Akufo-Addo sod cutting fake – NDC

The Savannah Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress ( NDC) has accused President  Akufo-Addo of cutting sod for a non-existing water project in Damongo.

According to the NDC, the Damongo water project which the President cut sod for during his visit to the region last week does not exist as there is no document to that effect.

Addressing the media in Damongo to react to the sod cutting for the project, the Savannah Regional Communication officer of NDC, Abdul Malik Basintale claimed that the only water projects as captured in the 2020 budget is the Yendi and Tamale projects.

“A new agreement was taken to parliament for some water projects under the “water for all policy” to be done at various towns in the northern sector. We had the Tamale water project, The Yendi water project among others but never saw the Damongo Water project. Upon enquiring, we were told that the Damongo water project had finally been abandoned and added onto the $272million Tamale water project in the Northern region”, Malik Basintale said.

“We wish to state on record that there is nothing like the “DAMONGO WATER PROJECT ANYWHERE” in this world”, he added.

The Tamale water project is expected to have its treatment plant situated at Yapei in the Central Gonja district of the Savannah region to draw water from the White Volta and would supply some few communities in the area.

The few communities the NDC said are to benefit from the Tamale water system because the government is intending to draw water from the White Volta.

They insisted there is no official provision for the Damongo water project and dared government to provide the contact details of the project.

“We dare them to show us the contract documents of the Damongo water project agreement, the company incharge, the site plan, the location in Damongo where the project will be situated, (because if you have a location you won’t go to cut sod at the town park), the project duration, the amount involved and the day the people of Damongo will see “Ghanawater” flow from their taps”.

On his part, former DCE for Central Gonja under the Mahama administration, Sualisu Biawurbi chastised President Akufo-Addo for “wanting to claim credit for the Yapei water project”

He noted that the Yapei water project which was also commissioned by the president during his tour in the Northern part of the country, was commenced the former President and was about 90% completed before exiting office and cannot be a project for the NPP.

President Akufo Addo during his recent three-day visit to the Northern part of Ghana commissioned the Yapei and Nalerigu water projects and cut sod for the commencement of Tamale, Yendi and Damongo water projects as well.
