Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah has mocked President Akufo-Addo over his pledge to build a national cathedral to honour God if comes into office.

Delivering his side’s response to the State of the Nation Address on behalf Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson who was conspicuously absent, Mr. Buah said he was not going to be critical on the pledge and would leave it to God to be the judge.

He said he wanted to remind the president since he did not mention the controversial project in his lengthy address.

“Mr. President, you left out something important in your account. You left out an account of your promise to God to build him a cathedral.

“My President, I’ll leave that for you and your God,” he said amidst laughter from his side of the aisle.

Mr. Buah laid into the the outgoing head of state for what he called an “abysmal record” during his eight years in the Jubilee House.

He said he wanted to inform the president that “his tenure in office will remain a timely reminder of how not to govern the country”.

President Akufo-Addo was in Parliament to deliver his last State of the Nation Address ahead of his exit on January 7, 2025.

As is customary, leaders of both sides of House deliver statements following the president’s address. Since Dr. Forson was not present, Mr. Buah who serves as his deputy spoke on behalf of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus.

The speech occasionally drew jeers from the opposition when the president touched on issues ranging from the economy to his ‘Agenda 111’ programme, requiring Speaker Bagbin to intervene to maintain parliamentary decorum.

At one notable instance, the speaker appeared to take a subtle dig at President Akufo-Addo, stating that data disapproving members had could be different from what was being read.
