Sweepers for Zoom Lion Ghana Ltd don’t have Health Insurance, no incentives – Manasseh

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has exposed a shocking revelation about the treatment of sweepers working for Zoom Lion Ghana Limited, a waste management company contracted by the government.

In an interview on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Awuni disclosed that these workers are not on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and receive no incentives.

“They have no health insurance. If you go there, then you die. If you go there, you get sick. You have no health insurance,” Mr. Awuni said, highlighting the dire situation.

Mr. Awuni also disclosed that the workers are paid a meager 250 Ghana cedis per month, below the minimum wage, while Zoom Lion keeps 600 cedis. “The contract says people should be paid 850 Ghana cedis per month, but Zoom Lion keeps 600 cedis and pays the workers 250 cedis.”

The investigative journalist emphasized that he has evidence to support his claims, including responses from the company.

The investigative journalist further stated that the Mayor of Accra, Madam Elizabeth Sackey, wrote to the Youth Employment Agency, expressing concerns about the dirty state of the city, as the sweepers were not showing up due to low pay.

Awuni emphasized that he has evidence to support his claims, including a letter from the mayor and responses from the company.

“I have evidence to support that Kofi went to the national security minister, Albert Kandapa, to say that this is a problem I’m facing. This contract is bad. I’m trying to do it.”
