Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama is teasing his main opponent and flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia following an initial failed attempt in the commissioning of the e-border system at the Kotoka International Airport.
Speaking at a mini rally in the Manso Nkwanta constituency as part of his campaign tour of the Ashanti region, Mr. Mahama said the mishap was an example of the government’s digital shortcomings.
“Yesterday, something funny happened. There is a machine at the airport that scans your passport and checks you in when you arrive in the country. This kind of machine can be found in many airports. I’ve never heard a president or vice-president commissioning such a technology because that is standard technology in every airport.
“And because Mr. Digital wanted everyone to know he is Mr. Digital, he cleared his schedule and went to launch the electronic gates. When he placed his Ghana card before the gate for screening, it wasn’t opening. He did it repeatedly and the gate wasn’t opening. The digital gate did not open for the digital man,” Mr. Mahama mocked Vice-President Bawumia.
The NDC leader was referencing an event commissioning electronic gates at the Kotoka International Airport, during which the screening process for Dr. Bawumia took quite long, causing the veep to awkwardly wait.
He accused the vice-president of overpromising and underdelivering on his digital transformation agenda, labeling it as a failed propaganda.
Echoing the NPP Presidential Candidate’s previous comments on the economy, former President Mahama said that the ruling party could do whatever they wanted, however, if the “fundamentals” were weak, “the digital gate will expose you”.
