2024 Polls: Desist from using vigilante groups, party foot soldiers to cause trouble – NDC Elders warn NPP

The Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) against using vigilante groups to cause chaos in the upcoming December elections on Saturday, December 7.

In a statement, the NDC Elders accused the NPP of being desperate to retain power and warned that the party might resort to any means necessary to secure a victory.

They expressed concerns over the NPP’s potential use of party foot soldiers disguised as national security personnel to instigate trouble.

Chairman of the NDC Council of Elders, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, further criticised the NPP government for its alleged actions.

The statement read, “The government is desperate; it knows its days are numbered, but it is doing everything to cling to power. While there is nationwide demand for change, concerns remain about the commitment of the Akufo-Addo NPP government to ensure a clean and fair election free from intimidation and the abuse of power.”

The NDC condemned the NPP for its alleged misuse of state resources, including sudden road repairs and voter bribery just before the elections.

The statement described these actions as “an insult to the intelligence of Ghanaians” and “a flagrant abuse of the democratic process.”

The Council reiterated that the NDC remains committed to a peaceful election and will comply with the National Election Task Force’s security plans.

They called on the government to desist from deploying vigilante groups and party foot soldiers under the guise of national security to disrupt the elections.

The statement further noted, “For almost eight years, the NPP government has fleeced and impoverished Ghanaians, stolen from the pensions of the aged, destroyed businesses, kept our roads in a deplorable state, and paid workers poorly with the excuse that the country is broke. Suddenly, we see the NPP government repairing roads on the eve of the elections and found money to distribute to voters whom they have kept hungry and deprived for years. These are all an insult to the intelligence of Ghanaians and a flagrant abuse of the democratic process. We are sure Ghanaians will teach them a lesson on December 7th. None of us in politics should take Ghanaians for granted. the National Elections Task Force, under the leadership of the Ghana Police Service, has laid out plans to ensure a peaceful election. The NDC will abide by it because we are promoters of peace. We demand the government to desist from using vigilante groups and NPP party foot soldiers in the guise of National security to foment trouble on the blind side of the election security task force. “
