Two persons have been arrested by the Ghana Police Service over a viral TikTok video in which a woman is heard making graphic death threats against President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.
The woman, identified as Yayra Abiwu — also known as “Akosua Jollof” and believed to be an activist of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in North Tongu — vowed in the video to kill the president before the end of 2025 and behead the First Lady.
She also mocked the recent Adansi Akrofuom helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment and Science Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six others.
Police confirmed that Abiwu and another suspect, Prince Ofori, alias “Fante Comedy,” were picked up on Tuesday, August 12, and are assisting with investigations. A manhunt is underway for additional suspects believed to be connected to the video.
Spoken mostly in Twi, the footage contains chilling threats, including claims of placing the president’s remains “in sacks.” The speaker also accused Mahama of “acting stupidly,” expressed loyalty to the NPP, and vowed to “remove” him from power.
Authorities have launched a full-scale probe and urged the public to remain calm. The police warned that the incident underscores the dangerous misuse of social media for incitement and threats, stressing their commitment to protecting all citizens, including the president and his family.
The August 6 helicopter crash victims named in the video include: Dr Omane Boamah, Alhaji Dr Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Dr Samuel Sarpong, Mr Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
“So far, two people, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, are in Police custody assisting the ongoing investigation while efforts are underway to get other persons believed to be connected to the video to assist the investigation,” the police said in a statement.
