Two people have been arrested in Accra for allegedly collecting between GH¢9,500 and GH¢22,000 from victims with promises of securing placement into their preferred Senior High Schools (SHSs).
The suspects, identified as 24-year-old University of Ghana graduate Vicentia Appiah Antwi and 18-year-old unemployed Suzzy Owusu, were arrested at the Resolution Centre on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
The arrest followed a report by two BECE candidates to Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.
The candidates reportedly provided evidence that money was being demanded in exchange for assistance with their preferred school placements.
Acting on the Minister’s directive, a Ministry of Education team alerted the security authorities and arrested the two suspects.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly named Nana Yaw Boateng, described as a supposed medical doctor at Kwadaso SDA Hospital in Kumasi, and Alex Asumani, also known as “Lexus”, as alleged accomplices.
The two suspects were interrogated, cautioned and detained for 24 hours before being granted bail and released to a credible surety. Police have also obtained statements from the victims and their parents.
“The Ministry reiterates that placement through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) is free, and no parent or student should pay money to anyone in exchange for placement,” it said.
The Ministry has urged the public to report suspected extortion, fraud or attempts to manipulate the placement process to the appropriate authorities.
