UPSA denies being served in Rashid Ibrahim legal case

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has denied receiving any formal writ or legal document in a matter involving one Rashid Ibrahim and the institution.

In a letter dated December 27, 2024, and signed by the Registrar, Lorraine B. Gyan, the university made it clear that it had not been served with any legal correspondence, contrary to reports circulating in the media.

The letter, addressed to the Chancellor of the university, stated that no application for an interlocutory injunction against UPSA had been filed, and the institution had therefore not been restrained from holding its planned investiture ceremony.

The Registrar noted that during a recent Council meeting attended by the Chancellor, UPSA’s lawyers advised that media reports about a potential writ could not prevent the university from proceeding with its scheduled activities unless a proper court order was issued.

The letter also confirmed that the university’s investiture ceremony was held as planned, in accordance with the UPSA Act, Act 850. The Deputy Minister of Education, representing the President, administered the Oath of Office to the incoming Vice-Chancellor, following the legal requirements mandated by the Act.

In addressing the Chancellor directly, the Registrar expressed regret over the Chancellor’s absence at the investiture ceremony but did not elaborate on the reasons behind it.

The letter emphasized the institution’s commitment to due process and its determination to maintain operational integrity despite concerns raised in media reports.

The correspondence, which was copied to key stakeholders, including the Chairman of Council, the Vice-Chancellor, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and the university’s records, highlights the seriousness with which the university is handling the matter.

As of the time of this report, Rashid Ibrahim or his legal representatives are yet to respond to UPSA’s position.

This case has sparked public interest, with many calling for clarification on the legal and administrative issues surrounding the university’s actions.
