The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West and Minister for Communications, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, on Friday brought together some leading women of the governing New Patriotic Party to discuss ways to empower the party’s women.

The gathering titled, the Ablekuma West Women’s Conference had in attendance, the National Women’s Organiser of the NPP, Kate Gyanfua, First and Second Deputy CEOs of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Afia Akoto and Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah.

The rest are; the Director General of the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Mawusi Awity, Deputy Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA) Olivia Okailey, the Director General of the Ghana Export Promotions Authority (GEPA) Afua Asabea Asare among other.

In her address, Mrs Owusu Ekuful spoke extensively on the need to empower the party’s women to be financially independent, which was the aim of the conference.

“Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to add value to ourselves,” She urged noting: “It is critical to discover ourselves.”

According to her, the party and the government is determined not to leave anyone behind as she called on the participants at the conference to jealously guard the power the NPP has, declaring that the NPP is the only party that can solve the challenges confronting the nation.

“We are determined to guard this power that we have jealously. Together we will fight to protect the power Ghanaians gave us. The worst NPP government is better than NDC’s best,” Mrs Owusu Ekuful said.
“Let’s go into the 2020 campaign,” she continued “with a sense of belonging and the notion that your problem is mine, mine is yours and continue to sit on the seat of power till thy kingdom come.”

Cautioning the participants against act that will endanger the chances of the party in 2020, Mrs Owusu Ekuful said: “If somebody is complaining in our polling stations, we, (the polling station executives,) especially the females, it is our responsibility to explain government policies to them so they will understand that since this government came to power, unprecedented development has touched every home in this country.”

“No one can deny that they don’t know someone who has benefited from free SHS. None of you can say that you don’t know anybody who is in nursing training who has benefitted from the restored nursing trainee allowance, who has got some job in the public service when there was a freeze on employment before we came to power. So please, when others are complaining let’s explain government policies to them and let them understand that it is easy to destroy…it is very…very easy to destroy things but very difficult to build a good foundation and to build a good building and that’s what the government of Nana Akufo-Addo is doing,” she said.

The Director General of the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Mawusi Awity urged the participants to stay away from sharing food when they attend party meetings saying, “We need to be empowered. That’s not our role. We should be part of the meeting and contribute to the decision making process. As an empowered woman you should be part of the decision making. It is very important.”
