Ahead of Ghana’s general elections on December 7th, the University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG) commended the Electoral Commission (EC), the Ghana Police Service, and the Election Security Taskforce for their work in ensuring a smooth and secure election process.

UTAG urged these institutions to remain impartial and transparent, emphasizing that public trust is crucial for national unity and a credible election.

In a statement, UTAG appealed to all Ghanaian youth, women, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations to safeguard Ghana’s peace and harmony

“UTAG appeals to Ghanaians from all walks of life including youth, women, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations to rally together to protect the peace and harmony that the nation has long cherished. Through unity, mutual respect, and a commitment to democracy, Ghana can continue to shine as a beacon of democratic excellence on the African continent.”

The statement stressed the importance of peaceful elections for Ghana’s democratic legacy and future stability.

UTAG called on all citizens, political parties, and stakeholders to uphold peace, unity, and civic responsibility, urging political actors and supporters to engage in non-violent dialogue and avoid actions that could incite conflict.

The association acknowledged the largely constructive nature of the recent political campaigns, which concluded on December 5th, focusing on policy discussions.

They further urged citizens to actively participate in the electoral process by voting and adhering to electoral guidelines, emphasizing responsible civic behavior

“The Association underscores that civic responsibility involves respecting others’ opinions, avoiding the spread of misinformation, and refraining from inflammatory behavior. These principles are key to upholding a credible and peaceful electoral process.”
