A coalition of civil society organisations dubbed Women’s Situation Room, has expressed concern about a shooting incident in Nyankpala in the Northern Region which has resulted in the death of one person and another injured.
At noon on Election Day, the police issued a statement announcing that it had arrested four individuals in connection to the incident. They added that the injured person was being attended to by medical personnel.
Commenting on the unfortunate incident, the Women’s Coalition Room called on security personnel to move urgently to preserve the peace in the area.
“The Women’s Situation Room Ghana is very concerned about reports coming from our domestic
elections observers in Nyankpala in the Tolon constituency indicating that one person has been
allegedly shot, several gun shots heard and a part of Tamale – Tolon road blocked.
“This situation is a worrying development for the Women situation Room. We call on the immediate intervention of the Security agencies to protect lives and the sanctity of the electoral process,” the group’s statement signed by its co-convenors, Thedora Anti and Dr. Charity Binka.
The coalition, which consists of the Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA), Ghana Working Group on Women, Youth, Peace and Security (WGWYPS) – Ghana and African Women Leaders Network (AWLN), revealed that it had dispatch 167 observers in seven regions across the country ahead of the general election.
