The National Peace Council is strongly condemning the shooting incident at Nyankpala in the Northern Region that has claimed the life of at least one person and caused injury to another.
This afternoon, the police issued a statement announcing that they had arrested four individuals in connection to the incident. They added that the injured person was being attended to by medical personnel.
Breaking its silence on the major violent incident during the election, the peace council condemned the situation and expressed sympathy with families of the individuals affected.
It also hit out at the use of firearms in the democratic process, enshrined in the constitution.
“The NPC condemns in the strongest terms killing and injuring of any person during the elections. We express our sympathy to the families and the local community in Nyankpala and in other locations affected by unfortunate and regrettable electoral violence. The NPC also condemns any use of firearms in the electoral process anywhere in the country,” the statement read.
The peace council reminded the political parties of the peace pact they signed two weeks ago as a guarantee to preserving the peace in the country.
“At the signing of the 4th Presidential Elections Peace Pact in Accra on 28 November 2024, all political parties pledged to foster peace and stability before, during and after the elections. We urge all political parties and supporters to keep the commitment their party leaders made in the interests of democracy and in the interests of a peaceful and stable Ghana,” the statement said.
It reminded the Ghana Armed Forces of its initial pledge ahead of the elections that it would not participate in a primary role at the polls unless called upon by the Ghana Police Service for back up.
