2024 Polls: GAF to deploy personnel to designated areas for security support

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced that it will deploy military personnel to assist the police in maintaining peace during the 2024 general elections, scheduled for Saturday, December 7.

The GAF emphasized that its role will be limited to supporting the police in ensuring a peaceful election process, not taking on primary security duties, which remain under the jurisdiction of the Ghana Police Service.

In a statement issued on Friday, December 6, the Director-General of Public Relations, E. Aggrey Quashie, reassured the public not to be alarmed if they encounter military personnel in their areas.

While the specific locations of deployment were not disclosed, the GAF clarified that its personnel would only be deployed at the request of the police for backup support and would not be stationed at polling stations.

GAF urged citizens to participate in the elections without fear, stressing the importance of cooperating with security forces and avoiding actions that could disrupt the peace.

“The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) wishes to inform the public that the deployment of its personnel to designated locations in support of the Ghana Police Service for the peaceful conduct of the upcoming 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections is ongoing. The public is therefore urged not to be apprehensive if they see the movement of military personnel in their localities,” the statement read in part.
