President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has condemned the actions of pro-NPP vigilante group Delta Force describing their actions as regrettable.
“I know that Ghanaians were dissatisfied with their living standards and the direction in which the country was heading. That is why they voted emphatically for change and that is why I was elected as president of the republic. It is for this reason that I regret very much the unfortunate incident that happened in Kumasi recently,” the president said in his first Easter message to Ghanaians.
The President added: “Inasmuch as the law enforcement agencies and judiciary have moved in to apply the laws of our land, let me reiterate that it will not be under my watch that people will act with impunity, neither will it be under my watch that the laws of the land will not be respected.
“That will not happen. Crime has no political colour under my government. We are a nation governed by the rule of law and the law will work without fear or favour.”
The President’s comment comes after the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) strongly condemned the failure of the Akufo-Addo-led administration to fully crack the whip and stop the violent activities of vigilante groups affiliated to the NPP.
The CDD also in a statement called on the president to ensure that measures are put in place to disband all vigilante groups affiliated to the party.
The Delta Force group stormed the regional coordinating council and attacked the security coordinator who was appointed by the President. According to the group, the security coordinator was an alien to them since he was not one of them.
13 members of the group were arrested and arraigned before court but some members of the group stormed the court, attacked the judge and freed their colleagues as the Police stood helpless.
The 13 members of the group were on Tuesday fined 2400 each for escaping from lawful custody and also made to sign a bond to be of good behavior for six months.
