George and Amal Clooney have welcomed twins.
The human rights lawyer, 39, gave birth to a girl, Ella, and a boy, Alexander, on Tuesday morning in England.
‘This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives,’ a spokesperson for the 56-year-old actor said in a statement.
The announcement ended with the quip: ‘George is sedated and should recover in a few days.’
George skipped a humanitarian event last week while waiting for the birth.
The actor joked that if his human rights lawyer wife had their twins while he attended the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity ceremony in Yerevan, Armenia on Sunday, he would not have been able to show his face at home.
Explaining his absence in a video message, George joked: ‘I really would have been [in Yerevan] but if I came there and my wife had twins while I was there, I could never come home.’
The pair are currently based in Berkshire, England, where they own a home.
The Ocean’s Eleven star, once Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor, recently said he’s delighted to be a family man now.
He said: ‘[I’m] even happier [than before]. I didn’t know that we’d have kids. I was very happy that we were going to get married and then [a pregnancy] seemed like the next step.’
Prior to the birth, George and Amal scaled back their international travels.
He said: ‘We decided to be much more responsible, to avoid the danger. I will not go to South Sudan anymore and in the Congo, Amal will no longer go to Iraq and she will avoid places where she knows she is not welcome.
‘Before, I did not care, I would even say that there was a pretty exciting side to going where no reporter had ever been.’
