At Least 25 students of the Klo -Agogo Senior High School in the Eastern region have been treated and discharged as severe Malaria and suspected cases of pneumonia continue to strike students.
The situation is being blamed on the accommodation crises facing the school which has compelled students to use classrooms as dormitories, without beds.
Physician Assistant at Klo-Agogo Clinic, Michael Essien told Starr News students are often brought to the facility with malaria.
“I will say virtually, every day you see students from the Secondary School, especially first-year students reporting cases like malaria, abdominal cases but mostly malaria dominates”.
Klo-Agogo SHS is facing severe accommodation challenges compelling School Authorities to convert classrooms into dormitories without beds hence students sleep on the floor in the congested condition inimical to their health.
Due to the congestion and lack of beds, the use of mosquito nets is an impossible option.
The students who cannot endure the heat and discomfort in the “dormitories” are forced to sleep outside.
The infrastructure crises at Klo-Agogo SHS, also known as High Klass, has also forced School Authorities to hold classes in uncompleted 12-Units storey Classroom block and pavilions.
The School has no dining Hall hence a canteen built by the 2007 -2011 year group of Students Representative Council (SRC), has been turned into dining facility where students eat in turns.
The Assembly Member for the Area, Harold Kuma told Starr News there is a looming Cholera outbreak in the School because students have resulted to open defecation due to the inadequate toilet facility.
“When you go to the toilet right now, we have eight seater; four for boys and four for girls, almost all the toilets are full, the girls; it is left with only one so when they go, they do it in polythene bags and just throw it away. So at the side of the toilet, there are some trees there when u see any polythene bag, it is a toilet”
