The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is engaging its grassroots as part of efforts to strengthen its connection with constituents and account for its development promises.
Speaking at a town hall meeting at Bukom Park in Accra, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Foyo Gbande urged party supporters to exercise restraint, insisting that development requires proper planning and cannot be achieved overnight.
He also called on party executives and assembly members to work closely with the grassroots and help communicate the government’s efforts to address their concerns.
“This is our party. This is our government. We wanted to be in government, and we are in government today.”
“Executives and assembly members have been elected to serve the party people. It is true that most of you have not got anything, but nobody knows what tomorrow holds for any of us.”
“If you do not work so that we connect together to solve your problems, the people will feel that nothing is being done when, in reality, something is happening.”
“We want to engage all our party people, listen to their problems and work to solve those problems.”
“It does not take a day to satisfy everybody, but with patience, we will enjoy.”
Mr. Gbande further urged party members to resolve their grievances through the structures of the party, stressing the need for unity and effective communication between the grassroots and the national leadership.
He said, “Being in power is always better than being in opposition. Whatever problems we have, whatever grievances we may have, and whatever difficulties we face, we must sit together as a family and resolve them.”
He encouraged party members to actively participate in branch and ward meetings to discuss their concerns and find solutions.
According to him, branch executives have a responsibility to listen to the concerns of party members at the branch level and channel them through the appropriate structures.
“It is the duty of the branch executives to listen to the concerns of party members at the branch level and bring those concerns to the constituency. The constituency will then take them to the region, and the region to the national level, so that we can engage government and work together to address our challenges.”
He appealed to party members to remain united, communicate openly, and use the party’s structures to resolve their concerns.
