NUGS executives commiserate with grief-stricken KUMACA

The President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Elisha Oheneba Essumang together with his executives has visited the campus of Kumasi Academy to solidarize with authorities and students.

The visit was also to suggest roadmaps to prevent future occurrence of such deadly outbreak.

Kumasi Academy has been in the news lately following the unfortunate deaths of some students who were stricken down by some illnesses leading to the death of about 11 since March and the hospitalization of about 16.

The Noguchi Research Institute has found it to be the H1N1 virus (Influenza Type A).

During the visit, the NUGS president with his Ashanti regional counterparts and other executives had a closed door meeting with the Headmaster and Assistant Headmasters of the institution to gather first hand briefing of the current situation.

The student leadership later donated 500 pieces of hand sanitizers to the school and promised to top it up to 1000. The sanitizers are to be shared to the students as part of efforts to support ongoing safety efforts.

The President of the Union, Mr. Oheneba-Essumang, also made it known to the school management and the press that NUGS will do all it can to prevent any of such future occurrences and this would be done by launching a National Health Campaign to educate the masses about such conditions.

He added that NUGS will meet with the Ministries of Education and Health to draw a road map to ensure that most of the Senior High Schools would have well equipped clinics and at least two nurses on each campus to attend to the health needs of students firsthand before referring cases to other hospitals in case of emergencies.

“This will not only help students’ access to good healthcare on campuses but also help government to employ some of the nurses who are home without jobs” he stressed.

The Executives later joined Asanteman to mourn with them at the Manhyia Palace.
