GFA Vice President George Afriyie sacked

The vice President of the Ghana Football Association, (GFA) George Afriyie has been relieved of his duties following a meeting of the Executive Committee.

A new Vice President is expected to be announced soon.

According to Starr Sports sources, his dismissal is in relation with Afriyie’s decision to declare his intention to contest 2019 GFA elections after Kwasi Nyantakyi publicly announced his decision not to seek a fourth term.

Breaking News: Mr George Afriyie has been released of his duties as the Vice President of the @ghanafaofficial following a meeting of the Executive Commitee. A new Vice President will be announced soon.

Afriyie was named the Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in 2015. President of the GFA, Kwesi Nyantakyi, named Afriyie as the vice president for a four-year term in office. He took over from Fred Crentsil.

Afriyie, 45, was named by the GFA president in the accordance to Article 30.3 of the First Amendment of the GFA Statutes passed by Congress on December 30, 2014 which states that: “At the maiden meeting of the Executive Committee, the President shall appoint from the membership of the Executive, the Vice President of the GFA and three other members who shall together with the President form the five (5) members of the Emergency Committee.”

The former GFA vice president has vast experience in football administration in Ghana after serving in various leadership positions with several clubs in the country including Swedru All Blacks, Accra Great Olympics and Liberty Professionals.

He has also worked with the various national teams in leadership positions.

Afriyie, until his appointment was the chairman of the Black Stars management committee. He served on various management committees of the national teams.

He served as the management committee chairman for the Black Meteors and Black Satellites as well as working on the Premier League Board and the Division One League Board.

He is a current member of the CAF Marketing and TV Rights Committee.
