A former Attorney General Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong has condemned the leaking of the police statement written by Ghana FA boss to the media.
Kwesi Nyantakyi is on a police enquiry bail having been reported by President Akufo-Addo two weeks ago for allegedly using his name to induce investors for money in an undercover project.
Nyantakyi was captured in the documentary dubbed: “Number 12” under the aegis of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas stashing $65,000 into a polythene bag to strike a deal worth $12 million with key government officials for the supposed investors to gain favours in Ghana.
Copies of his statement to the police flooded social media a few days ago after a media house disclosed sensitive aspects of it.
Speaking on the development, Mrs. Appiah-Oppong described the leak as “unfortunate”.
“It’s unfortunate because you’re actually aware that people are at the Supreme Court trying to ask the Supreme Court to order the release of documents and statements gathered during criminal investigations to help them in defending their clients.
“These matters are still in court so if indeed it was true that this leak came from the police it is unfortunate because even defense lawyers have difficulties having statements like this. It is unfortunate it finds its way in the media when defense lawyers can’t have it,” the former attorney general told host of Morning Starr Francis Abban.
After watching the video in Accra, Mrs. Appiah-Oppong said there are grounds for prosecution of the officials who were captured in the investigative piece on Ghana football by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The comment comes as several high profile officials of the Ghana FA including the President of the Association were seen taking bribes from Anas’ men to compromise their decisions on the game and other interests.
The Football Association has said even though it is yet to watch the video, it will not shield any official captured in the investigative piece.
“The GFA wishes to place on record that, there will be no attempt of a cover-up or shield any of our members caught in alleged acts of corruption. The GFA wishes to assure all that as an institution it does not condone any manner of corrupt practices,” the statement added.
