Five people have been confirmed dead at Ayanfuri-Gyaaman a community in the Upper-Denkyira West District of the Central Region after a mining pit caved in on them.

Two others have also sustained various degrees of injuries.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Dunkwa Municipal hospital.

The Dunkwa District Police Commander DSP Edmund Jones Affutu who was at the scene confirmed the incident to newsmen adding that his outfit has begun investigations into the incident.

He said “4:30 pm I had a distress call a so I organized my men. When we got there we found out that five people had been trapped after the side caved in. On the spot, we found out that two of them were dead, but we could not confirm.”

Five of the victims were taken to the Pentecost and Dunkwa municipal hospital but were confirmed dead on arrival.

“This morning I also went to the site and we inspected the place and found out that there was a big crack which caused the site to cave in,” he added.

The commander noted that the victim’s identities are yet to be ascertained by the family.
