The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Partnership with the Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Nyarko Ampem has commissioned first ever DVLA Office in Asuogyaman District in the Eastern Region as part of efforts to decentralise its services and bring vehicle registration and driver licensing services closer to Ghanaians.

The Asuogyaman office is the 25th of 40 new district offices being established across the country by the end of 2026.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Nyarko Amepm said the new DVLA office has ended struggles car owners, drivers and riders go through travelling long distance to other Districts and nearby regions to access vehicle registeration, license acquisition and renewal services.

As a goodwill gesture, the MP paid a substantial amount for free license acquisition and renewal for 500 qualified drivers and motor riders in the district.

The Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe said the decentralisation of DVLA office is aimed at improving road safety through driver education and professional training, amid concerns over road crashes and indiscipline on Ghana’s roads.

He urged residents to make full use of the facility and desist from patronising intermediaries, popularly known as “Goroboys”, who facilitate fake driving licences and vehicle registration documents.

“You don’t need to travel to Somanya or Koforidua to renew or register your vehicle. This is your office. Make use of it,” the Minister said.

The Minister disclosed that government, in collaboration with the police, is introducing Traffic Tech, a technology-based system designed to detect offences including speeding and other crimes on the roads.

He said the government was also working on new number plates with embedded SIM technology, which would support law enforcement agencies in monitoring vehicles and improving road safety.

According to him, the technology would help the police bring greater discipline to the country’s roads.

Meanwhile, the DVLA says its newly introduced vehicle cloning detection technology has helped it identify and seize about 200 vehicles within a month and a half.

The DVLA Chief Executive, Julius Neequaye, explained that vehicle cloning syndicates obtain genuine customs documentation and use chassis numbers belonging to legitimately imported vehicles to register similar vehicles that may have been brought into the country without proper duty payments.

He said the cloning detection technology enables the DVLA to verify chassis numbers directly with vehicle manufacturers, helping the Authority detect cloned vehicles before they are improperly registered.

Biometric International Driver’s licences and cashless services

The CEO also announced plans to introduce biometric international driving licences that can be verified internationally.

He said the Authority was also improving its vehicle registration and licensing systems, including the introduction of more efficient and decentralised printing of driving licences.

According to him, DVLA offices across the country will eventually be equipped to print licences locally, reducing delays in the issuance of documents.

The DVLA is also expanding its cashless payment system as part of efforts to eliminate cash transactions and improve efficiency and transparency at its offices.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey commended the Deputy Minister for facilitating developements in Asuogyaman listing a number of major road constructions across the district and other vital infrastructure in health ,education, economic empowerment among others.
