Dec. polls: Akufo-Addo will win with 51.7% – UG Survey

The Political Science Department of the University of Ghana has projected that President Akufo-Addo will win the December 7 polls.

According to a survey published by the department, President Akufo-Addo will garner 51.7% while the NDC Presidential candidate will pull a little over 40% of the votes.

“When respondents were stretched to indicate the presidential candidate they would vote for in the December 7 elections, 51.7% declared for Akufo-Addo, 40.4% favour John Mahama and 1.4% would vote for Christian Kwabena Andrews, and 1.4 and the undecided are 3.7% (See Table 29),” the report released today said.

It added: “These voters have taken a firm decision to vote for these candidates in the election. When pushed to indicate how sure they are with the decision to vote for the candidates, a whopping 80.9% said they are extremely/very sure while 11.9% are relatively (somewhat sure) of voting for their candidate”.

Another report by pollster Ben Ephson has also projected a victory for President Akufo-Addo and the ruling party.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is unfazed by the latest polls by the pollster.

Reacting to the report, National Organiser of the NDC Joshua Akamba said the NDC will not allow themselves to be distracted by the survey by Mr Ephson.

“Ben Ephson predicted the same thing for us in 2016 and it sent us into opposition. This is something that is going to take the NPP into opposition, he predicted it before, and when he did, the opposite happened so let the NPP not be happy at all. Ghana will once again be blessed to have a leader like  John Mahama who will deliver Ghanaians from the wicked hands of Nana Akufo-Addo,” he told Morning Starr host Francis Abban Wednesday.

Also reacting to the news, a deputy General Secretary of the NPP Nana Obiri Boahen, said the ruling party will not rely on the polls for its strategies.

“NDC presently being led by Mahama is unfit to lead this country. We are going to deliver a heavy blow to the NDC. As long as Obiri Boahen is alive, the NDC is not coming to power. I don’t rely on opinion polls, prophecies. But I rely on the volume of work we have put into this exercise,” he said.
