Man shot dead after butchering grandmother to death

A 33-year-old mentally deranged man has been shot dead after butchering to death his grandmother, Yaa Amanyanu, 94, to and inflicting machete wounds on Cousin.

The mentally ill patient was chained at prayer camp near Dompoase Junction a suburb of Adeiso but escaped.

He went to the house and butchered the grandmother with a machete.

He similarly attempted to hack the head of his cousin identified as Agbesi but he blocked the matchete with his hand sustaining leaving him serious injury but managed to escape.

The suspect became more aggressive, ambushed the Police and attempted to attack them with the machete , however, the police fired gunshot to maim him.

He was disarmed and rushed to Nsawam government hospital together with his injured cousin for treatment.

The mentally ill man was however pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The body of the grandmother and the Mentally deranged have been deposited at the mortuary of Nsawam Government Hospital.

This is the second incident within a week in the Eastern region.

On August 13, 2023, a mentally ill patient Nayo Annor who is in his twenties allegedly killed his aged visually impaired Uncle Kwaku Emmanuel at Nuaso a suburb of Lower Manya Krobo

The victim was eating when the suspect violently attacked him with a machete and inflicted multiple wounds on his neck and other parts of the body, killing him instantly.

The suspect was saved from being lynched by some angry residents who rushed to the scene.

He was handed over to the Police for further investigation.

The incidents have instigated renewed calls for city authorities to get rid of increasing mentally ill patients on the streets in parts of Eastern Region.

Residents of Akyem Oda in Birim Central municipality are similarly alarmed by increasing number of mentally ill persons in the town.

The residents claim most of these mentally ill persons are strangers with no family in Akyem Oda therefore believe some families in cities intentionally abandon them in Oda township.

The Krontihene of Akyem Kotoku traditional area; Obrempong Gyamfi Saforokyere II also shared the sentiments of the residents.

He called for investigation into the situation for an immediate action.

Meanwhile the municipal chief Executive for Birim Central municipal ,Hon. Victoria Adu said District Security Council have taken notice of the situation and assessed the dangers particularly when the mentally ill persons are strangers .

She said action will son be taken.
