Akosombo Dam Spillage: Chief Justice supports victims with GHC125k

The Judiciary through the Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo has presented an amount of GHc125,000 to flood victims of the Akosombo Dam Spillage.

The gesture according to the Chief Justice which was made on behalf of the Judiciary and Staff of the Judicial Service of Ghana (JUSAG), was to be used to drill bole holes for tue affected communities.

Justice Torkornoo who wasSpeaking at the short ceremony, said the donation was made possible through the various contributions from the JUSAG and the Judiciary.

According to the Chief Justice, her outfit was moved by the plight of the victims after the spillage.

Justice Torkornoo, expressed her joy after no lives were lost despite the destruction of various properties and commended the various leaders who have worked hard to put things together to make life better for the victims.

Concerning the Diatrixt Courts that have been shutdown particularly the Ada District Court, the CJ was optimistic that they would be reopened soon so that people would be able to access justice delivery.

Surprise gesture

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in the company of Chiefs and Queen mothers of the three traditional areas said over 12,600 people were displaced because of the spillage and so far, 21 displaced camps have been set up.

While acknowledging that donations from Ghanaians had lessened the plight of the victims, Mr Ablakwa said, he was surprised by the kind gesture of the Chief Justice, the Judiciary and JUSAG for their contributions.

“We are indeed surprised by the donation from the Chief Justice and the Judiciary. We now know that justice is not only contained in your judgements, but your judgements also contain mercy and kindness,” the MP for North Tongue said.

“When the news of receiving the donation gets to our people, they would be joyous over the acts of our jurists and eminent judges.”

Mr Ablakwa assured that, the donation would be used for its intended purpose and no pesewa would be lost.

“In fact, this is the happiest day ever since the disaster struck.”

The Paramount Chief of Battor Traditional Area and Vice President of Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbega Patamia Dzekley VII,
expressed his appreciation to Judiciary for the gesture.

He said, real natural Justice has been delivered by the kind gesture of the Judiciary.
