In a dramatic turn of events, Organized Labour has suspended its planned strike, initially scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2024. This comes on the back of ongoing government efforts to address key issues, including the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The decision to suspend the strike follows a contentious meeting held by Organized Labour, during which members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and other unions staged a walkout. The unions were set to deliberate on collective action in response to various unresolved labor concerns but departed the meeting prematurely, citing disagreements.
The strike was expected to put pressure on the government to act swiftly on labor demands, particularly as illegal mining continues to pose significant environmental and economic challenges. However, government officials recently announced new measures to curb galamsey, which may have influenced Organized Labour’s decision.
Organized Labour has yet to provide a detailed explanation for the cancellation of the strike, but sources indicate that discussions between government representatives and union leaders remain ongoing. GNAT’s walkout, in particular, signals internal discord within the labor movement, raising questions about whether the suspension will lead to more prolonged disputes.
