Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, says the shooting incidents that led to the killing of some Ghanaians in the previous election should never occur again in 2024 polls.

Eight persons were killed in the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections out of which police confirmed five were gunshot-related.

Despite calls from the NDC and civil society organizations, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is yet to launch an investigation into the shootings to hold the perpetrators accountable.

Speaking to voters in Nkurakan on Wednesday in the Yilo Krobo Constituency during her two-day campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang who is a former Minister of Education and First Female Vice Chancellor of a Public University in Ghana stated that such violence must not recur in the 2024 elections.

“They [the NPP government] should not deploy people to shoot indiscriminately during voting. We don’t want to hear about such incidents again in this country. We want everything to go on smoothly for a peaceful election. Ghana is a peaceful country, a refuge for many nations experiencing political instability,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also called on the Electoral Commission to ensure that the upcoming elections are free, fair, and transparent. “We want peace, and the Electoral Commission must guarantee a free and fair process. Violence has no place in our elections, and we must prevent it from happening again,” she concluded.

Speaking on policy proposals by the NDC, she stressed the National Women’s Bank stating that it will provide access to finance for women in the country to boost economic activities.

She mentioned plans by the NDC to continue the building of modern markets across the country for women to have continent place to trade.

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang urged the voters to vote for John Dramani Mahama and retain the NDC member of parliament Albert Nyarkotey.
