The Ghana Police Service has dismissed claims that the arrested leader of ‘Stop Galamsey Now’ protests, Oliver Barker Vormawor, could not receive receive medical care because it was unable to absorb the cost involved.
In a statement, the police noted that they had covered all medical-related expenses of Mr. Vormawor ever since he has been in custody.
“The Ghana Police Service has noted with concern recent social media publications suggesting that the Police Hospital returned accused person, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, to Police custody due to lack of funds to cover his medical expenses.
“We would like to state that these claims are palpable falsehoods which is part of the numerous attempts aimed at courting public sympathy.
“We would like to emphasize that every cost associated with his visit to the hospital was borne by the Ghana Police Service in line with our Standard Operating Procedures with respect to suspects in our custody. However, we are unable to share the evidence regarding the medical expenses due to doctor-patient confidentiality,” the statement explained.
The police also rejected assertions that Mr. Barker Vormawor had been rushed to the hospital, calling them “part of a set of baseless claims”.
Few days ago, Mr. Vormawor who had been the lead protester of the ‘Stop Galamsey Movement’ was denied bail a third time after the Attorney-General opposed his application. He was arrested two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, nearly all protesters who were picked up during the initial protests against illegal gold mining at the 37 roundabout in Accra have been granted bail.
