A member of the Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has disclosed that he was strangled in the police cell when he was arrested.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor was arrested on September 23, 2024, by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the protests organized by the Democracy Hub against illegal mining also known as galamsey from September 21st to 23rd in Accra.
The protests resulted in roadblocks and the obstruction of traffic at key intersections, leading to heightened tensions between the demonstrators and law enforcement.
In a conversation on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Oliver Vormawor disclosed that he was strangled and abused while in the police cell before he was conveyed to the Dansoman SNIT police station.
“About six officers entered and asked where your things were. So I asked what the issue was and the next thing I knew, I was being strangled. I was being choked like this, then the other person was stepping on my feet, then the other person was knocking me in my head. And this goes on for about 15 minutes”, he narrated.
The leader of #FixTheCountry protests Oliver Vormawor further explained that he screamed while struggling to breathe.
“I’m trying to breathe. I am screaming, I can’t breathe. And everybody in the cell was watching.”
Oliver Vormawor says the statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on what was happening in the cells was inaccurate. According to him, the injuries he sustained were from three police officers assaulting him, not while being transferred to another cell.
