Private legal practitioner, Nana Kwesi Buertey has dismissed predictions of a runoff in the 2024 presidential election, contradicting recent polling data suggesting a tight race.
A poll conducted by Prof. Smart Sapong of Kumasi Technical University indicated a potential runoff, with Dr. Bawumia leading at 49% and John Mahama at 45%, Buertey expressed strong confidence that the election would be decided in the first round.
Lawyer Buertey’s dismissal of the poll’s prediction stems from his belief that voters will make their decisions based on their lived experiences and the government’s performance.
He argued that the economic hardships faced by many Ghanaians will directly influence voting patterns.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko, Mr. Buertey stated: “Without a doubt, this election will be won in the first round, and I have no doubt. Ghanaians will make decisions based on lifestyle. They’ll check how much they buy a ball of kenkey, bread, and how much they pay their electricity bill.”
He asserted that the NPP government’s failure to deliver on its promises would lead to its rejection by the electorate.
“The NPP and this government of the day have not proven themselves ready for a retention,” Nana Kwesi asserted.
He further dismissed the predictive value of polls, stating that they often fail to accurately reflect actual election results.
“I would not be fooled by polls anymore,” he concluded.
His emphasis on the economic realities faced by Ghanaian voters suggests a belief that economic factors will be the most significant determinant of the election’s outcome, potentially leading to a decisive victory for one candidate in the first round.
