Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has defended the government’s recruitment of new employees after the 2024 election.
According to Aboagye, these recruits are Ghanaians who deserve employment, and their hiring should not be an issue.
Aboagye’s comments come in response to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for the Mahama Transition Team, who announced plans to reverse all appointments made after December 7, 2024.
Kwakye Ofosu expressed concerns about the timing of these recruitments, citing allegations of last-minute hiring and an unexplained GH₵240 million payment to a business partner of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
However, speaking in an interview on GHOne TV with Serwaa Amihere, Mr. Aboagye defended the recruitment process, emphasizing that the individuals hired are also Ghanaians and therefore deserving of employment.
He argued that the government is still in place and functioning, even after the election. He emphasized that government work continues until the new administration takes over in January 2025.
Aboagye questioned why there should be an issue with Ghanaians being employed, stating that if the new administration wants to sack them, it’s their prerogative.
“Why would you complain when a Ghanaian has a job to do? Why? How is that a problem? The health professionals, you remember their financial clearance came as far back as November or October. So government is still working, government is in progress. So why are you worried about it when a Ghanaian is employed? If you want to sack them, sack them but that’s your prerogative. If you come and you think that a Ghanaian has been employed, you are coming to create jobs, but a Ghanaian has been employed and you sack the Ghanaian. Unless there’s a Togolese or an Ivorian or a British that has been employed.”
He added, “And I am saying that government is still in place, government is still in play. 2028, government will still be in play post the elections up to January. What government has to do, government has to do, I still insist on that. I don’t think that anybody should have an issue when a Ghanaian is being recruited.”
