The Member of Parliament-elect for Asante Akim North, Ohene Kwaku Frimpong says the underdeveloped state of the constituency contributed immensely to his massive win as an independent candidate.
Mr. Frimpong, who unseated incumbent MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi in the just ended parliamentary elections, said the constituency had seen close to nothing with regards to development, causing frustration among locals.
The businessman’s surprise win in a constituency long regarded as a stronghold of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) was reflective of the party’s woeful performance in the general election as a whole.
Mr. Frimpong indicated that the outgoing MP had been unable to get the incumbent government to embark of major developmental projects in a safe seat.
“The MP was not forthcoming. There was basically lack of development in the constituency. Asante Akyem Agogo, where I was born, is the capital of the constituency. But you could tell if you got into Agogo and if you were driving, I know that MPs are not responsible for constructing roads, I understand that, but if your MP is vibrant, he call help lobby for development in the constituency. You could tell that there was nothing happening in the constituency,” he told Serwaa Amihere on Hard Talk.
Mr. Frimpong said residents in the constituency complained bitterly about the deplorable roads and the fact that there was “not a single factory” established by the government.
He said voters were unhappy that the central government under its flagship ‘One District, One Factory ‘ agenda, had provided a factory, yet, was not producing.
“I personally visited the site and the floor of where the machines were sitting was not even cemented. It was an eyesore,” he stated.
He expressed commitment to embarking on projects to bring about progress in the constituency.
