The fashion designer behind President John Mahama’s iconic outfit, Matthew Agambire, says the outfit adorned by the new head of state on his inauguration day was designed to resonate with the historic event.
In an interview on GH Today with Serwaa Amihere, the designer revealed that the process began two months before December 7 elections last year.
Although he highlighted his love for working with clothes, he disclosed that the journey came with challenges, particularly in sourcing quality fabrics.
Beyond designing the elegant outfit, the designer said he designed seven distinct outfits for that day.
He also shared his humble beginnings, starting his sewing journey without a shop but driven by a dream to make a mark in the industry. He stressed the need to revolutionize the fashion industry.
“I started planning it two months before the elections. I felt like this was a whole nation issue not even only national but the whole world is watching so if you want to do something that will stand out or fit the occasion, you needed more time. So, I decided to put ideas together. So, I took his picture and decided to take an estimate of his measurement. I needed something that resonated well with man himself and the occasion.”
“But let me also emphasize that, that wasn’t the only outfit that I made. I made at least seven outfit for that because I am not the only one who make his clothes. I had the feeling he will like something Ghanaian so let plan around that.”
“I think that we need to revolutionize the fashion industry. We can’t boost of any huge manufacturing plant for fabrics. Even if we look at agriculture, most of the fabrics are source from cotton how do we source cotton? We will have to get to the basis from production first and then we get to setting up huge factories.”
