The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has called for strategic repackaging and effective promotion of all traditional festivals in the region to attract more tourists and boost the local economy.

The Minister explained that the region’s rich cultural heritage is a key asset for economic development, particularly in the tourism sector hence the need to pay critical attention to it.

She made this call during her address at the rescheduled end-of-year meeting of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs held at the Ofori Panyin Fie in Kyebi on Thursday, 6th February 2025

She noted that festivals, which are an integral part of the region’s cultural identity, present significant opportunities for cultural exchange and economic growth.

“One of the greatest potentials we have in the region is our rich culture and traditions, which are embodied in our festivals,” she stated. “These festivals do not only serve as an important part of our cultural identity but also represent significant economic opportunities, particularly in tourism.”

She added “We have a responsibility to ensure that our festivals are well-packaged and promoted not only as an avenue for cultural exchange but also to add to the tourist attractions in the region, attracting both local and international visitors. Together, we can organise these festivals in a way that celebrates our heritage, brings people together, and creates sustainable economic growth for our communities”.

Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey called for collaborative efforts to organize and promote festivals in a way that celebrates the region’s heritage, fosters unity, and attracts both local and international visitors. “Together, we can organize these festivals in a way that celebrates our heritage, brings people together, and creates sustainable economic growth for our communities,” she added.

On formal Education, the Regional Minister also reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to improving education in the region.

She stressed that education is the foundation for building a brighter future and pledged to address challenges such as infrastructure deficits, teacher shortages, and lack of teaching materials.

“My administration will prioritize education. I have always believed that education is the foundation upon which we can build a brighter future for our children and generations to come,” she said. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey also emphasized the importance of cultural education, urging traditional leaders to support initiatives that instill a sense of heritage and pride in the youth.

Combating Illegal Mining

The Regional Minister expressed deep concern over the devastating effects of illegal mining, or galamsey, on the region’s environment and water bodies.

She called on traditional rulers to use their authority to help curb the menace, stressing the need to strike a balance between economic activities and environmental preservation.

“Nananom, you will agree with me that we cannot talk about sustainable growth without addressing the urgent issue of illegal mining or galamsey, which continues to damage our environment, pollute our water bodies, and jeopardize the future of our region,” she said.

She commended some traditional leaders for their efforts in protecting the environment and assured them of the government’s commitment to implementing policies that promote responsible and legal mining practices.

Addressing Chieftaincy Disputes

The Minister also touched on the issue of chieftaincy disputes, which she described as a threat to peace and stability in the region. She assured traditional leaders of the government’s support in mediating conflicts, providing legal clarity, and fostering dialogue to resolve disputes amicably.

“Chieftaincy disputes, when left unresolved, have the potential to disrupt the peace and stability of our communities,” she said. “I wish to reassure you that the government will continue to support efforts to mediate, provide legal clarity, and foster dialogue so that any conflict can be resolved amicably.”

She expressed commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region, emphasizing the role of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) in collaboration with traditional authorities. She pledged to work closely with chiefs to ensure the safety and well-being of all
