In a rain-affected encounter at the Athletic Oval, Balagi Group of Companies (BGC) Cricket Club fought hard to defeat Defenders in Qualifier A of the ongoing Ghana Cricket Association T20 League.

The Week 10 fixture saw Defenders winning the toss and opting to field first in a reduced 17-over match. Coming off a loss to table-toppers Rana Motors, BGC approached the game with determination but struggled to reach 100 runs, as Defenders excelled in fielding.

Yahaya Adamu (3.0-0-13-3) and Daniel Anefi (4.0-0-21-2) delivered outstanding bowling performances, causing trouble for BGC’s batting lineup. Only Anmol Singh Virk managed a solid contribution, scoring 34 off 39 balls.

BGC eventually posted 92/8 and knew they needed an exceptional bowling effort to secure victory and maintain their top-four hopes.

Defenders, who had stunned Supreme with a last-ball six in their previous game, faced an early shock as Francis Bakiweyem fell to Hassan Shah Ali on just the second ball of the innings. By the third over, three wickets were already down, limiting Defenders’ momentum.

A crucial partnership between Jacob Ayoleyine and Daniel Anefi gave Defenders a fighting chance, but captain Devender Singh dismissed Ayoleyine at a key moment. Defenders could only muster 87/8, falling five runs short.

Hasan Shah Ali was named Player of the Match for his exceptional spell of 3/10. With this win, BGC remained second on the table with 8 points and one match left to play, while Defenders, sitting fifth with 6 points, still have two matches to fight for a top-four finish.

Evolve Paint Dominate Ras Binghi

The afternoon match saw Evolve Paint Cricket Club overpower Ras Binghi with a dominant all-round performance. Ras Binghi, still winless in the league, looked hopeful as they dismantled Evolve’s top order.

Benjamin Amoah (4.0-0-31-3), Nurudeen Ibrahim (4.0-0-8-3), and Reuben Charles Pobee (4.0-0-34-2) led Ras Binghi’s bowling attack, causing early collapses.

Apart from Elijah Afula’s resilient 37*(41), Evolve’s batting lineup struggled, with key players like Ashok Bhera, Mark Bawa, and Julius Mensah failing to cross the 15-run mark. Evolve were bowled out for 123, a score they knew they had to defend fiercely.

Ras Binghi’s chase got off to a disastrous start, losing Emmanuel Ofoh in the third ball of the innings. The collapse continued, with wickets tumbling at regular intervals—Reuben Charles Pobee Okine fell in the second over, Benjamin Amoah in the third, and Ernest Arthur in the fourth.

By the end of the powerplay, Ras Binghi were reeling at 23/4. Evolve captain Anil Navalekar turned the game completely in his team’s favor with a brilliant spell, taking 4/9 in four overs, including two wicket-maiden overs.

Karan Evolve joined the wicket-taking spree, dismissing the Addison brothers in the eighth over, sealing Ras Binghi’s fate. The struggling side was eventually bowled out for just 37 runs in 10.5 overs.

Navalekar’s match-winning performance earned him the Player of the Match award, with impressive bowling figures of 4.0-2-9-4. Evolve Paint’s 86-run victory pushed them to joint third place with BGC at 6 points, separated only by net run rate. Ras Binghi remain at the bottom of the table, yet to register a win after five matches.

With Rana Motors already securing a top-four spot with 10 points, the battle for the remaining three qualification slots in Qualifier A is intensifying. BGC, Evolve Paint, Carel Super Kings, and Defenders will fight to secure their place in the Premier division.
