Court suit may not finally resolve Afenyo-Markin extortion claims – Jantuah

CPP’s Kwame Jantuah warns Afenyo-Markin lawsuit may not settle extortion claims, flags possible out-of-court deal

A leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah, has expressed scepticism that the lawsuit filed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over alleged extortion will deliver lasting resolution, warning that political horse-trading could still intervene.

Speaking on GHToday on GHOne TV on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, Jantuah noted that the matter is now before the courts and that the evidence will ultimately determine the truth of the claims.

He observed, however, that the outcome carries significant political implications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker.

“Basically, it’s going to court. The evidence will show whether it’s true or whether it is false. The other side of the coin is that if he then wins, it strengthens his position in the NPP. It strengthens his position. He becomes a key in the NPP. If he loses, then very quickly his influence will go down the drain,” Jantuah said.

He added that Ghana’s political culture of mutual accommodation makes an out-of-court settlement within Parliament a realistic possibility.

“But I conclude by saying, we have seen in this country’s politics, you scratch my back, I scratch your back. I wouldn’t be surprised down the road if this entire thing is taken out of court and settled within parliament. I would not be surprised, and for me, that can happen. Because, tell me, who has gone through such a thing and we’ve had a result at the end? I haven’t seen it at the moment. So, let’s see. I hope it doesn’t go down that line, but that possibility is there,” he said.

The Effutu Member of Parliament, announced in Parliament on 24 August that he had caused writs to be filed against Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), and others, as well as media houses, over the extortion allegations.

The suits include actions at the Accra High Court and Achimota Circuit Court.

The claims stem from public statements by Gyamfi describing the Minority Leader as an “extortionist,” alongside related petitions seeking investigations by the Inspector-General of Police, Criminal Investigations Department, Office of the Special Prosecutor and Attorney-General.
