The Local Government Service Workers’ Union (LGSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has announced that its unwillingly participate in the ongoing strike action declared by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG).
In a statement dated February 20, 2025, the LGSWU explained that the strike does not align with the pressing priorities of its members. The union emphasized that its primary focus remains on securing an improved salary structure and better working conditions for workers in the Local Government Service.
“For these reasons and upon further consultations by the National Management Committee with all Regional Councils, the Local Government Service Workers’ Union of TUC has taken a unanimous decision not to join this strike action. We hereby strongly urge all members and staff across the various MMDAs, RCCs, and OHLGS to continue with work as normal”, the statement read.
The dispute leading to the strike stems from concerns over the appointment of Mrs. Henrietta Lamptey as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry. CLOGSAG had previously challenged the appointment in court but lost the case at the High Court. LGSWU, however, believes that continued dialogue and negotiations can help resolve the matter without the need for industrial action.
“It is important to recall that in 2022, CLOGSAG filed a suit at the High Court, challenging the appointment of Mrs. Henrietta Lamptey as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry. The High Court ruled in her favor, meaning that the case was lost as a Union,” the statement noted.
Instead of joining the strike, LGSWU reiterated its commitment to advocating for the welfare of its members through peaceful engagements. “We will ss a Union ontinue to prioritize and put our energies into advocating for an equitable and enhanced salary structure tangible gains that will benefit every worker under the Local Government Service,” the statement concluded.
