The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to embracing every sporting discipline in Ghana, including e-sports.
During a meeting with executives of the E-Sports Federation on Friday, February 28, 2025, the Minister assured them of his support in promoting and developing the sport nationwide and beyond.
Hon. Adams stressed that the Ministry is ready to work with stakeholders to support the expansion of e-sports and that it does not discriminate against any athletic activity. He emphasized that Ghana must not fall behind the fast global trend toward electronic sports participation.
He advised the federation’s executives to be vigilant against cyber threats that could jeopardize the sport. Additionally, he pledged to work alongside them to make e-sports a widely recognized and respected discipline in Ghana.
The Minister, however stated that researched show over $1 trillion is available for the development of sports worldwide. He expressed confidence that the E-Sports Federation has the capacity to tap into these resources for the sport’s advancement.
Hon. Adams further revealed that the Sports and Recreation Ministry is reviewing the Sports Act and will involve stakeholders like the E-Sports Federation in shaping the final legislation.
The President of the E-Sports Federation, Mr. Igor Boumekpo, congratulated Hon. Adams on his appointment and introduced members of the federation’s executive team. He highlighted that e-sports was officially recognized by the National Sports Authority in 2024 and has since organized multiple national and international tournaments.
Mr. Boumekpo reaffirmed his dedication to the growth of e-sports in Ghana and assured the Minister of the federation’s full cooperation in developing the sport. He also appealed for government support in establishing regional e-sports centers in all 16 regions to promote inclusivity and expansion.
With the Ministry’s commitment and the federation’s drive, the future of e-sports in Ghana looks promising, setting the stage for the country to become a competitive force in the global gaming industry.
