Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has charged the newly inaugurated governing board of the Gaming Commission to prioritise the fight against irresponsible betting in Ghana.

According to the minister, the growing trend of betting addiction and the involvement of minors in betting activities pose significant challenges to national development and require urgent attention. He was speaking during the swearing-in of an 11-member board at a brief ceremony on Friday.

Alhaji Muntaka revealed that the government is working on new legislative frameworks aimed at strengthening oversight and sanitising the country’s betting and gaming space.

“The commission must help curb underage and irresponsible betting. New laws are being considered to address the gaps in the current regulatory regime,” he noted.

Chairman of the new board and Member of Parliament for Tema West, Hon. James Enu Esq. (President’s Nominee), expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in them and assured the minister that the board will promote responsible gaming. He also announced plans to support the implementation of a 24-hour gaming regime in line with President Mahama’s proposed 24-hour economy policy, which takes effect from July 1.

Other members of the board are:

  1. Renee Aku Sitsofie Montie – President’s Nominee
  2. Bardini Abed-Niego Azumah – President’s Nominee
  3. Sedem Kweku Afenyo, MP – President’s Nominee
  4. Emmanuel Sitsi Quainoo – Gaming Commission of Ghana
  5. Prof. Kobby Mensah – Ministry of Tourism
  6. Solomon Tetleh Mensah – Ministry of the Interior
  7. Dr. Dinah Kwasi Wisdom Zoku – Ghana Police Service
  8. Dela Kemevor – Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development
  9. Mrs. Rosemary Parker – GRA (Ghana Revenue Authority)
  10. (Vacant) – Yet to receive nomination from Ministry of Finance (MoF)

The board is expected to play a key role in enforcing ethical gaming standards and guiding the development of the sector.
